I discuss the nature of research in philosophy, and the question as to how research of the kind that I do, on ancient philosophical texts from 2500 years ago, can still be relevant. Using the example of Plato's idea of knowledge of the Forms, I suggest that we do not need to regard the ancient thinkers as a source of bedazzling confusion, to be set aside if we are to see clearly the way forward, but rather that we can learn better which road to take by considering things that the ancients said, things that seem slightly quaint or peculiar, which may in fact be more helpful than we thought.
